The title
In the first months of mourning, Liz found it hard to sleep and was often awake in the quiet of the night.

Vespers is an album about tragedy: the record of a life and death, an act of devotion and reflection, dedicated to Liz’s sister Jessie, who died in 2024 aged just 35.
It was written over three weeks, six months after Jessie died, and recorded and produced by Liz herself at Vada Studios in Worcestershire, a deconsecrated church close to her home and family.
In the first months of mourning, Liz found it hard to sleep and was often awake in the quiet of the night.
A lyric from ‘Yves Blue’, “put on the blindfold / an elephant on a ball”, became the cover, drawn by Liz’s aunt.
The songs began simply, often as just a vocal, then fleshed out on the nylon-stringed guitar Liz has had since she was ten.
‘Thank God For You’ came to Liz on the drive home from a counselling session, sung into her phone as a voice note. Rae Morris plays piano on the finished track.
“An elegant, clear-eyed conversion of pain into a sober, sentimental beauty”
“It’s very sad, but with such detailed observation that the result is less an exercise in sentimentality, more a moving and novelistic portrait of a short life and premature death”
“One of the most beautiful, affecting and life-affirming records you’ll hear all year”
“I urge you to listen, then listen again: make sure you’ve taken in every single word that she sings”
“Elegiac, stripped-back folk peppered with delicate string arrangements”
“It’s that rare thing, a sad album which is not morose. It’s one you want to hear again”
