The Avalanche album cover

The Avalanche

Released 17 September 2021 on Second Breakfast

Liz’s third album came quickly. She wrote, arranged and played everything herself and, for the first time, produced the whole record too, in ‘The Coffin’: the studio she built with her dad, a carpenter, where her grandfather’s garden shed had stood unopened for 20 years.

It is a muscular, extroverted record, made to be moved to, and named after Tacita Dean’s drawing The Montafon Letter: an avalanche buries a priest, and another avalanche unburies him.

The story

The Coffin

In the summer of 2020 Liz left London for her hometown in the West Midlands and built a studio from scratch.

The title

The morbid humour of the Montafon story appealed to her, along with the idea that what destroys us may also save us.

Looking outwards

After the inward-looking Pity Party, these songs are about the world as much as Liz’s own life.

Babies

Inspired by videos of babies laughing on the internet, “a panacea for all ills”.

Reviews
